The guzheng is one of China's oldest plucked string instruments, with roots tracing back to the Warring States period (around the 5th century BCE) — over 2,500 years ago. Understanding its evolution helps students appreciate the cultural weight this instrument carries.

起源:从「瑟」到「筝」Origins: From the "Se" (瑟) to the "Zheng" (筝)

The guzheng's predecessor is the "se" (瑟), an earlier, larger 25-string instrument. Historical records suggest that the state of Qin (in today's Shaanxi region) gradually developed a version with fewer strings that was easier to carry and play — the "zheng," which is why the guzheng is also called the "Qin zheng." Folklore explains the character "zheng" (争, meaning "to contend") through a legend of brothers fighting over a se, a story that may be more myth than fact, but vividly reflects the instrument's cultural roots.

The Evolution of String Count: From 12 to 21

During the Han and Tang dynasties, the guzheng typically had 12 to 13 strings with a relatively limited range. In the mid-20th century, musicians undertook major reforms, expanding the instrument to 21 strings and replacing traditional silk strings with nylon-wound ones, greatly widening its range and expressive power. This reformed 21-string guzheng is the standard form most commonly played today.

From Court Music to the Modern Stage

The guzheng was once a central instrument in court music and scholarly gatherings, symbolizing refined artistic cultivation. Today, it thrives not only in traditional ensembles and grading exams but also appears frequently in film scores, popular music, and cross-genre performances — continuously reaching new audiences around the world.
